Well so much for regular blogs. I have been lazy. Or more to the point busy. And it has been so hot in Victoria. I really don't like the heat much. But anyway, January has been busy. Replacing an old boundary fence. Horses are so easy to fence in on the one hand, but such a disaster when they get tangled in them on the other.
Lily has been coming on so well. She has been truly amazing, but I must admit Thoroughbreds are something else to feed. I have even bought some extra books on nutrition (at least as a bookseller - I just buy any books I want!!). She has learnt so fast and I do have a few more photos to post when we get them off the camera. She is now mouthed pretty well and my son Andrew has crawled all over her, slides off rump etc, and is riding her bareback. Pretty good considering he is not actually a rider, but hey he is a lot younger and fitter than I am.
A friend asked me to teach his young Arab colt to float the other day and that was fun. I love floating horses, it is so satisfying. His name was Fitz, and he was so young, arrogant and beautiful. My friend has a great sand yard that Fitz was in waiting for me. When I went to catch him, he cantered around me for 5 or 10 minutes, head up, tail up - look at me he was saying. When he started to slow I cracked the whip a few times to keep him going. Eventually he decided going into the adjoining small yard was a great idea and he stood to attention to be caught.
Then 10 minutes or so of longing and facing up with a Jeffrey rope, and he was right to face a float. I don't care what anyone says, Arabs are special. So spirited, adolescent in outlook. He went off occasionally but seemed to look first to make sure it was safe. Anyway, 2 hours after arriving Fitz was strolling onto the float like a Pro (with the divider out though). I didn't have the heart to tell him it was all so he can make a trip to the vet.
